Like so many young boys growing up in Australia, I would always play on the old gun in the park. Later, as I grew older, I came to understand the significance of these war trophies and the immense sacrifice connected, not only with the Great War, but with each individual gun.
That fascination extended beyond simply these captured German artillery pieces to a wider interest in military history generally. To satisfy my own curiosity as much as anything, I wrote a short story about the Australian War Trophies distributed around the country in the early 1920s as memorials to the 50,000 men and boys who gave the supreme sacrifice.
Beyond our shores, I will also make a point of tracking down any such relics and this quest has taken me to some pretty remote places in the Pacific, Southeast Asia, Europe, North America and even Africa. Below I have added images from my Flickr album accumulated over the last 20-30 years. New images will appear from time to time, so it’s worth checking back occasionally.
