Struth: Stay in a Luxury Aircraft Carrier Hotel [updated]

As international luxury hotels proliferate across China at an unprecedented pace, a shift in traveller preference is emerging. Increasingly, affluent Chinese guests are seeking accommodation that offers not just comfort, but character—properties with historical depth, unconventional design and, in some cases, a distinctly ideological past.

One of the more unusual responses to this demand is taking shape in Tianjin, where a former Soviet aircraft carrier is being transformed into what is expected to become China’s first ex-naval hotel.

A Cold War Relic Reimagined

The project centres on the Kiev (基辅号), a retired Kiev-class aircraft carrier acquired by China in 1996. Today, the vessel forms the centrepiece of Binhai Aircraft, an 80,000-square-metre military theme park that opened in 2004 in eastern Tianjin.

Backed by government support, the park has steadily evolved into a major tourist attraction. Its latest development—the conversion of the carrier into a hotel—represents a significant investment, with the parent company reportedly committing around US$15 million to the transformation.

Initial works have focused on high-end accommodation, including three presidential suites completed in August, the largest spanning 400 square metres.

UPDATE March 2026
Key Features of the Aircraft Carrier Hotel
  • The Vessel: The hotel is housed within the Kiev, a 273-metre-long Soviet-era heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser sold to China in 1996.
  • Accommodation: The carrier features 148 rooms, including several lavish presidential suites. These suites are known for their extravagant decor, such as silver cushions, gold trimmings, round beds, and cowhide rugs.
  • Dining: It is home to what is billed as the "world's first Western restaurant on an aircraft carrier," which serves primarily Russian cuisine like borscht and pelmeni.
  • Theme Park Experience: Guests and day-visitors can explore the command centre and intelligence rooms, view Cold War-era missile firepower, and watch live-action stunt shows featuring pyrotechnics and jet-skis.
Visitor Information (As of March 2026)
  • Location: The park is located about a 90-minute drive from central Tianjin or accessible via Metro Line 9 to Tanggu station, followed by a taxi.
  • Status: While the Tianjin Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park remains a popular tourist destination for exploring the ship's interior and deck, some reviews suggest that full hotel operations for overnight stays may be limited or vary by season; it is recommended to check direct booking availability beforehand.
  • Park Hours: Typically open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm for general visitors.
