As international luxury hotels proliferate across China at an unprecedented pace, a shift in traveller preference is emerging. Increasingly, affluent Chinese guests are seeking accommodation that offers not just comfort, but character—properties with historical depth, unconventional design and, in some cases, a distinctly ideological past.
One of the more unusual responses to this demand is taking shape in Tianjin, where a former Soviet aircraft carrier is being transformed into what is expected to become China’s first ex-naval hotel.
A Cold War Relic Reimagined
The project centres on the Kiev (基辅号), a retired Kiev-class aircraft carrier acquired by China in 1996. Today, the vessel forms the centrepiece of Binhai Aircraft, an 80,000-square-metre military theme park that opened in 2004 in eastern Tianjin.
Backed by government support, the park has steadily evolved into a major tourist attraction. Its latest development—the conversion of the carrier into a hotel—represents a significant investment, with the parent company reportedly committing around US$15 million to the transformation.
Initial works have focused on high-end accommodation, including three presidential suites completed in August, the largest spanning 400 square metres.

- The Vessel: The hotel is housed within the Kiev, a 273-metre-long Soviet-era heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser sold to China in 1996.
